Things are heating up at the Castle…and is this weather for real or what! Thanks to all who donated for the Samaritan’s Feet event we had at AK on Tuesday. Special thanks to AK DECA Club who helped us collecting donations during the game. All the donations and half-court monies will be sent to this organization to send shoes to those who need.
Through February, continue to help support Samaritan’s Feet by texting SHOES 85944 for $10 donation to help send a pair of shoes to parts of the USA and overseas countries in need of shoes to play sports and survival.

AK Women’s SWIM team won the SW Conference title with a great showing over Providence at MCAC downtown last Friday night. The Women won their second consecutive CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP after beating runner-up Providence by OVER 80 points! The Men won their first ever Conference Runner-Up title, finishing around 50 points behind two-time defending state champion Providence. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN PROVIDENCE SCHOOL HISTORY, PROV WAS OUTSCORED IN A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET IN THE COMBINED WOMEN'S AND MEN'S TEAM SCORES!

AK Wrestling defeated South Meck 49-19 at home last week for victory at SENIOR NIGHT and remained undefeated in SW Conference! We traveled to Independence Tuesday and lost our first Conference match 32-30. Close match as we came from 5 matches down to nearly take the match. We are in second place in Conference and have match at East Meck on Friday. Congrats to Coach Higgins and team as they continue to wrestle strong leading up to post-season.

AK Women’s Varsity Basketball defeated South Meck and Independence to go 16-3 (8-1 Conference) with an 8-game winning streak. Our JV’s remain undefeated at 13-0-1 (JV games end in a tie stay tied so to get varsity games completed!), and will also face MP to break that tie thing!!! BIG match-up with Myers Park this Friday as MP is our only loss in SW Conference play. Good luck to Coach Lawrence and Coach McVicker and staff and teams on Friday!!! Come on down to town via Rea Rd/Colony to support our bkb teams!

AK Men’s Varsity Basketball were defeated by South Meck, but held their lead all game vs. Independence for the win Tuesday night! We are 7-12 (3-6 conference) Our Men’s JV’s are 6-10 as they were defeated by SM, but won a great game vs. Independence. Congrats to Coach Craft and Coach Carver as we face tough Myers Park away on Friday.

AK Indoor Track placed well at Olympic as they continue to qualifying for states. Next action is Tues/Wed- Jan 31-Feb 1 at Marvin Ridge. Good luck to Coach Zelk and teams as we train to compete at States on February 11 at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Please take note of important dates and deadlines for AK SPRING SPORTS:
 
DEADLINE-Friday, February 3^rd-

1. ALL AK Athletic Packets for spring sports must be turned into your coaches by this date if you are interested in participating in spring sports.  If you have not turned in this complete packet by deadline, you will not be able to try out for a spring team.  Fall and winter team athletes have already turned theirs in for the 2011-12 year, but ALL must have a current medical physical that does not expire during the spring season.

 

2. Complete the CMS Athletic Eligibility Certification Form with 2 acceptable documents stapled

to this form.  Make sure to complete form with signatures and NAMES of the adults you live with and using only choices on form.  NO CELL or CABLE bills accepted.  Can only use 1 utility (electric, water, gas and dated within 45 days) along with another option on form.
IF  the student-athlete has been on an AK team in the fall or winter THIS YEAR, they will NOT have to resubmit this form and proofs again this year.
 

3. REQUIRED Concussion Forms and Honor Codes will be signed at Spring REQUIRED Eligibility Meeting for Parents and Student- Athletes.  They will be collected after conclusion of your team meeting that night.  Both SA and parent must be present to turn into coach after team meeting.

 
DATES to Remember:
                Monday, February 13 is first official Spring Sports teams try-out date.  Remember, you must
                have a current AK Athletic Packet/medical physical and Cert form with proofs in to your coach
                by Feb 3!
 
                Tuesday, February 14 is NCHSAA/CMS/AK Spring REQUIRED Eligibility Meeting for Parents and
                Student- Athletes. Due to hosting SW Conference BKB tourney, only date available this
                week…we’ll have chocolate for everyone!!!  PLEASE BE PROMPT for 6pm start in AK Gym!!!
 
                Wednesday, Feb 22 is ONLY make-up date for Eligibility Meeting.  6pm start in G207 or TBA.
 
                Monday, Feb 27 is 1^st possible Spring Contest Date (real games!!).
